Meet the team behind Bay of Islands swimming club
At Bay of Islands swimming club, we believe that great coaching makes all the difference. Our team of dedicated swim coaches brings experience, passion, and a deep commitment to helping every swimmer grow — both in and out of the water.
Whether you're just starting out or training for competition, our coaches create a supportive environment where swimmers can build confidence, improve technique, and achieve their personal best.
Meydi Bell
The Bay of Islands Swimming Club is proud to have Meydi Bell as our new Head Coach
Meydi has been a dedicated and valued member of our club for many years, and her long-standing commitment to our swimmers and deep understanding of the club’s values and goals make her the ideal person to lead our coaching team.
In her new role, Meydi is responsible for developing and delivering tailored training plans, with a strong focus on supporting our competitive swimmers in achieving qualifying times for regional and national events. Her experience and passion for athlete development is the driving force behind the club’s continued success.
Meydi will be supported by our fantastic coaching team:
Kim Komene
With a passion for the water and a gift for encouraging young swimmers, Kim is the friendly face who welcomes our newest members to the pool. Kim has a knack for making beginners feel confident, safe, and excited to learn, blending patience with a fun, supportive teaching style. Whether it’s a first splash or learning proper technique, Kim helps every swimmer take their first strokes towards a lifetime of enjoyment in the water. Her dedication, positive energy, and love for swimming make her an invaluable part of our Bay of Islands Swimming Club family.
Katja Caulton
Katja brings energy, expertise, and a genuine passion for helping swimmers reach their potential. With a strong background in competitive swimming, she focuses on developing technique, building confidence, and fostering a love for the water in swimmers of all ages. Katja’s supportive and motivating style makes training both challenging and fun, inspiring athletes to push themselves while enjoying every stroke. She’s dedicated to helping every swimmer grow and succeed.
Together, this team brings a strong blend of experience, energy, and care to every level of our swim programme.
Our Committee
Our club is led by a passionate and dedicated committee who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep everything running smoothly—both in and out of the pool. From organising competitions and social events to managing memberships and championing our swimmers’ success, each member brings their own expertise, energy, and love of the sport.
Being part of the committee isn’t just about keeping the club afloat—it’s also a great way to make friends, share ideas, and have a lot of laughs along the way. We’re always looking for new faces and fresh perspectives, so if you’ve got enthusiasm to spare and want to help shape the future of our club, we’d love to have you on board!
Our Club Mascot Ted the whale - Our biggest fan!
Ted isn’t just any whale — he’s the heart and splash of our swimming club. With his friendly smile, powerful tail, and boundless enthusiasm, Ted reminds us that swimming is all about strength, teamwork, and having fun in the water. Whether he’s cheering from the poolside, splashing into events, or inspiring new swimmers to dive in, Ted is always ready to make waves. Keep an eye out — if you see a whale-sized grin, you’ve found Ted!
Our club thrives thanks to the amazing support of our community, and there are plenty of ways you can join in. Whether it’s lending a hand at our fundraising events (like our ever-popular sausage sizzles), helping at club nights and carnivals with timekeeping, or even becoming an accredited volunteer with Swimming New Zealand, your contribution makes a real splash! No experience is necessary – just enthusiasm and a willingness to help. Together, we can keep our club swimming strong.
